Do you have a damaged tooth that needs restoration? Perhaps your dentist mentioned you might need a crown or a cap.

While both terms sound similar, there are actually some key differences between dental crowns and caps.

At Somos Dental, we understand that dental terminology can be confusing, so we’re here to explain the difference between dental crowns and caps.

Crowns vs. Caps: Are They the Same Thing?

The short answer is no. While both crowns and caps are used to restore damaged teeth, they cover different parts of the tooth:

  • Dental Crown: Completely encases the visible portion of the tooth, like a tiny hat. Crowns are commonly used for teeth that are severely damaged, fractured, have undergone root canals, or have severe discoloration.
  • Dental Cap (also known as an inlay or onlay): A dental cap covers only a portion of the tooth, typically the chewing surface or one or two sides. Caps are generally used for teeth with moderate decay or minor fractures.

How do I know if I need a Crown or a Cap?

Your dentist will examine your tooth and assess the extent of the damage to determine the best restoration option.

In general, crowns are recommended for more severely damaged teeth, while caps may be used for less serious dental problems.

In our Downtown Phoenix clinic, we always recommend patients follow their dentist’s guidance. They can assess your specific case and determine if a crown or a cap is the best option to restore your damaged tooth.
