When it comes to improving your smile the first thing that comes to mind is “Maybe I should get braces”. Sometimes, depending on your problem, you can’t avoid them! It is that or a highly invasive procedure.

But sometimes braces are just not what we want or need at the moment.

Depending on what you are looking for specifically you have multiple options to choose from. You might be looking to straighten your teeth or just make them look different without waiting.

In those cases, and in certain specific conditions you can avoid braces and opt for other options.

If you are looking for alternatives to braces here are some options you can take into consideration.

Retainers

Retainers are a removal dental device, usually made of metal, used to position the teeth.

You might think that retainers are used after you get braces to position your teeth… and you would be correct! but there is a situation where retainers can be an alternative to regular braces.

When the required movement of the teeth is minimal your doctor can recommend retainers instead of braces.

They are usually cheaper than braces and easier to maintain than braces.

Clear Aligners

You might have heard about Clear Aligners by their commercial name: Invisalign.

These alternative braces are a series of clear “molds” that align your teeth into shape. To see results you must use them at least for 20 hours a day for two weeks straight until you “graduate” to the next mold.

Not everyone is elegible for Clear aligners, there is a series of requirements to check off before getting them.

If you want to know if you are eligible, you should contact your dentist and get a consultation first.

Veneers

Veneers are thin coverings that are placed over the front part of the tooth.

This alternative to braces only works on an aesthetic level, since it doesn’t correct things like overbite or crooked teeth, it only covers it.

They are made from many different materials, including porcelain and resin and usually are very durable, but last less than braces or the other methods mentioned.
