Cosmetic Dental Procedures You Need to Know

Going to the dentist is not just cleanings, braces and extractions, in actuality you can divide the procedures into categories depending on the end goal of the procedure. These are General Procedures and Cosmetic Dental Procedures.

Even though they can overlap, both of these categories serve a different purpose. For General Dentistry the objective is to address dental problems associated with pain, discomfort and oral hygiene.

For Cosmetic Dentistry the main goal is to improve the aesthetic of your smile!

And there are multiple procedures to do so, depending on your needs and preferences. Maybe you want whiter teeth or to restore their shape, there may be a procedure for you.

Here they are, 5 Types of Cosmetic Dental Procedures You Need to Know:

1. Tooth Whitening

Often known as Tooth Bleaching this procedure changes the color of your teeth to a renewed white color.

This is the most popular procedure out there, it’s perfect for people who only need a little bit of brightening on their smile. It’s simple and most of the time affordable.

There are multiple options to get your teeth whitened, from over-the-counter bleaches to use in your house to procedures with the dentist.

But you need to be cautious, not everyone is qualified for teeth whitening procedures. It all depends on individual factors that need to be evaluated by a professional dentist.

2. Dental Veneers

Dental Veneers are Custom-made caps that go over your natural Teeth. Usually they are made from medical-grade ceramic.

This procedure is often used for people with degraded or cracked teeth. It is also used to hide noticeable gaps between to teeth.

They are extremely realistic and are applied by a professional dentist with a dental adhesive, similar to the one used on braces.

3. Crowns (As a Cosmetic Dental Procedure)

Remember when we talked about the overlap between general dentistry and Cosmetic Dental Procedures? here it is in action.

A dental is a tooth-shaped “cap” that’s placed over a weak or damaged tooth. It improves their shape, size, strength or appearance.

Depending on the type of crown you get, it can last from 5 to 15 years!

This are made from multiple materials: Metal, porcelain fused with metal, resin or ceramic.

Crowns need to be applied professionally by a Dentist, since they need to file down the affected tooth to be able to put it on.

4. Braces

Continuing with the overlap between procedures, there are braces.

Technically braces are an Orthodontics procedure, however since at the end of the day affects the shape and look of your smile, we decided to include it in this list.

As you may know, braces can correct crooked or misaligned teeth.

They work by applying steady pressure over time to slowly move teeth into alignment.

5. Cosmetic Teeth Shaping

Also Known as “Enamel Shaping” is a procedure in which the dentist fills or removes some of the enamel.

This process is usually immediate and not painful

People use this method to re-shape their teeth in case of getting a chipped tooth or if they are degraded by time.
